Finals season is often a very stressful time. Exams, papers, and projects can feel very overwhelming. But fear not, Kappa Alpha Theta has some tips to help you stay organized and stress free!
Finals and stress can throw off your diet, so be conscientious about what you’re eating and drinking this week. First, it is very important to stay hydrated. Water is key because it will keep you alert and oxygenated. Doctors recommend aiming for eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid per day, so fill up your Hydrate SLU water bottles and grab a drink! However, be sure to go easy on the caffeine. Although you may think that tea or coffee counts towards your daily hydration goal, caffeine can can cause increased heart rate, anxiety, and increased stress levels. Caffeine should be consumed in moderation. Additionally, as you head off to your favorite study spot, watch what you snack on and be sure to pack healthy snacks to keep your energy up. Some healthier options include nuts, grapes, apples, and other fruits instead of junk food. Another great snack option is apples with peanut butter for protein! Healthier foods will give you more energy to keep studying so you can ace those exams! But don’t rely solely on snacks for sustenance; be sure to eat regular meals. Maintaining your normal eating schedule will help keep you focused and healthy. Never skip a meal to study. Take short breaks to eat meals and don’t study while eating. It’s healthy to take a break to eat. Eat a full, healthy meal and then get back to work.
While this week is filled with studying, make sure to balance studying with everything else. Getting plenty of sleep during finals week will not only help keep your stress level down, it will allow you to better retain the information you’ve worked so hard to learn! When you sleep, knowledge goes from short term to long term memory, so be sure to get plenty of rest. Make sure that while you are spending hours studying, you’re also taking short breaks. Take a walk outside, get some fresh air, or hit the gym. This will keep your mind and body active and can help reduce stress levels. Use your time wisely and stay organized. Make to-do lists to ensure you have plenty of time to get projects done and can avoid cramming last minute for an exam. Also, taking time to clean your dorm room or apartment will help you feel more organized and de-stress.
Get excited, you are almost done! Soon it will be winter break and you will have plenty of time off. If you are lacking motivation to push through the last of your finals, plan what you are going to do during break. It will give you something to look forward to after your finals are finished. Listen to Christmas music while you are studying. Find a relaxing playlist of Holiday music to study to. It will motivate you to finish your finals so you can relax with family during the holidays. Trust me, the hard work will be worth it!
Good luck on your finals!
